Are Your Feet Causing Your Back Pain?

Something that often surprises our new patients when they come in for their first treatment at Live Well is that we adjust the whole body — we don’t simply focus on the spine.

Allow me to explain … from the ground up. Our feet are at the base of our “kinetic chain,” meaning the way they work and move impacts how the other parts of our bodies work and move, too. If you are walking around on feet or lower extremities that are uneven, that could trickle up and eventually affect your knees, lower back, and even your neck!

When you have your feet evaluated at Live Well, we will look at the 33 joints in that area and assess that they are in the right place and moving as they should be. During your new patient exam, we also evaluate your arch. When your arch drops or is too high, it changes the way your body moves. Weak arches cause the knees to shift too far inward, leading the hips and pelvis to move unnaturally. This in turn puts stress on the lower back and spine, which can lead to back pain.

Because foot and ankle health is so important, we often recommend custom orthotics to our patients and have found that they benefit greatly. Custom orthotics are helpful because they are made specifically for your body. Our Foot Levelers orthotic machine scans the bottom of your bare feet and assesses for pronation, arch problems, and other factors that could be creating pain in your body. As chiropractors, we find that patients who regularly wear their custom orthotics hold their adjustments for longer periods of time.

Foot Levelers offers orthotics that fit in dress shoes, cleats, boots, and even sandals. At your next appointment, be sure to ask us to look into your foot health. The Foot Levelers scan takes less than 5 minutes, and your results will be emailed to you and your doctor so you can discuss them during your next visit.
