Cold Laser Therapy — Another Tool to Aid Your Healing

A non-invasive therapy used to treat both acute and chronic conditions, cold laser therapy helps reduce inflammation, pain, muscle tension, and improve healing times. Increasing in popularity since its approval by the FDA in 2001, cold laser therapy is now used in chiropractic, orthopedic, physical therapy, and dental offices.

Cold laser therapy uses a near infrared wavelength of 600–950 nm. At this wavelength, red light can penetrate the skin to reach the tissue of the area being treated. The light breaks up nitric oxide in the tissues, which is holding on to the oxygen required for energy synthesis in the damaged cells, allowing more oxygen to be used by the mitochondria for metabolism and healing. Through this process, and the increase in cellular metabolism, the inflammatory cascade is slowed. The results include reduced swelling, increased rate of healing of the bone, ligaments, tendons, and surrounding tissues, and release of endorphins, and rapidly reduced pain levels.

As indicated by the name, “cold” laser therapy does not produce heat in the tissues compared to hot lasers, which are used for surgical purposes, making it a painless and safe therapy for many, including those with diabetic complications. (A cold laser does not produce a cooling sensation either.)

Cold lasers therapy lasts between two and ten minutes and treatment plans may range from two to twenty visits depending on the severity and type of condition.

Research studies have shown favorable outcomes for those with:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chondromalacia patella
  • Fractures
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Herniated discs
  • Jaw pain/TMJ dysfunction
  • Lymphedema
  • Muscle pain
  • Nerve pain
  • Neck pain
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Sprains and strains
  • Tendonitis (golfers and tennis elbow)
  • Wound healing (including those related to diabetes)
