Tongue Ties in Infants

A tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, is a condition a baby is born with in which the band of tissue holding the tongue to the floor of the mouth (called the lingual frenulum) is abnormally short or thick. The result is decreased motion and function of the tongue. While the lingual frenulum typically separates before birth, up to 10 percent of all babies will be born with a tongue tie according to the Mayo Clinic.

When the tongue and lingual frenulum fail to separate, baby may struggle to latch during breastfeeding. As a child ages, tongue tie can impact speech patterns.

Signs and symptoms of an unresolved tongue tie:

  • Notched tongue at rest or when tongue is lifted toward upper teeth (observed while latching or crying)
  • Decreased tongue mobility from side to side or up and down
  • Inability of tongue to extend past the lower teeth when stuck out
  • Inability or difficulty to latch while breastfeeding

The chart below shows how tongue tie are evaluated. Depending on the severity of a tongue tie, a small surgical procedure called a frenectomy may be performed by a trained pediatrician, dentist, or otolaryngologist (ENT) to cut the band of tissue and allow the tongue to move more freely.

How can chiropractic help with tongue tie?

Evaluation: Not all tongue ties require a frenectomy and may not be the source of a latch issue. Subluxation, or misalignment of the vertebrae in the upper neck, or a tight jaw can cause pulling throughout the head and neck region resulting in tongue restriction. Evaluation for the root cause of tongue restriction and latch issues with a chiropractor is a good place to start.

Realignment: In the event the vertebrae of the upper neck or jaw are out of alignment, pulling at the surrounding soft tissue, a gentle alignment and muscle release can help restore proper movement and function.

Pre-and post-surgical care: In the event surgical intervention is necessary, advanced care of the head and neck structures can help promote recovery. Post-operative care can help with rehabilitation of the tongue, head, and spine in addition to supporting wound healing and supporting baby through early development.

In addition to chiropractic adjustments, craniosacral therapy is a gentle hands-on technique that is effective in helping baby’s alignment and easing muscle tension.
