Introducing SoftWave Therapy: The Next Level of Healing

We are so excited to introduce SoftWave Tissue Regeneration Therapy to our practice in Chanhassen, Minnesota!

Shockwave technology was originally developed in the medical field for breaking up kidney stones (a procedure called lithotripsy). Over time, researchers discovered that these acoustic waves didn’t just break apart stones, they also stimulated powerful biological healing responses in musculoskeletal tissue. From there, shockwave technology became widely studied and used for chronic tendinopathies, particularly stubborn conditions such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Tennis/pickleball elbow
  • Calcific shoulder tendonitis

Shockwave technology is designed to stimulate tissue regeneration without causing tissue damage. While it began as a solution for chronic soft tissue injuries, its applications have expanded significantly as research has continued. Today, it’s used in orthopedics, sports medicine, and rehabilitation to help accelerate healing, reduce pain, and restore function, especially in cases where traditional conservative care hasn’t fully resolved the issue.

But what exactly is SoftWave therapy, and why are we so excited about it? Let’s break it down.

What Is SoftWave Therapy?

SoftWave Therapy is a form of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) that uses patented, unfocused acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured or degenerative tissue.

Unlike traditional shockwave devices that deliver energy to a small focal point, SoftWave disperses energy in a broader, more controlled field. This allows us to:

  • Target superficial and deeper tissues
  • Stimulate healing without causing tissue damage
  • Treat both acute and chronic conditions
  • Promote regeneration rather than just symptom relief

In short: it works with your body to jumpstart healing.

How Does It Work? (The Science Behind It)

SoftWave uses high-energy acoustic waves that penetrate tissue and create a biological response at the cellular level. Here’s what happens when we apply the treatment:

  • Mechanotransduction: The acoustic waves create mechanical stimulation in tissue. Your cells convert this mechanical stimulus into biochemical signals, a process called mechanotransduction. This signals your body that healing is needed in that area.
  • Stem cell activation: Research shows SoftWave Therapy can stimulate the activation and recruitment of endogenous stem cells, which are critical for tissue repair and regeneration.
  • Increased blood flow (neovascularization): SoftWave Therapy stimulates formation of new microvasculature. More blood flow means more oxygen, nutrients, and healing capacity delivered to damaged tissue. This is particularly important in chronic injuries where poor circulation has stalled recovery.
  • Pain reduction: SoftWave Therapy has been shown to decrease inflammatory mediators, reduce substance P (a pain-signaling neuropeptide), and desensitize chronic pain receptors. Many patients notice pain reduction within just a few sessions!

What Conditions Is SoftWave Effective For?

While originally used for chronic tendinopathies, its applications have expanded significantly to include almost every region of the body:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel spurs
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Chronic ankle instability
  • Peroneal tendon irritation
  • Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction
  • Persistent ankle sprains

Shoulder

  • Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Calcific tendonitis
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Biceps tendon irritation
  • Pain reaching overhead
  • Pain sleeping on the affected side
  • Chronic stiffness after injury

Knee

  • Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
  • IT band irritation and bursitis
  • Pes anserine bursitis
  • Quadriceps tendinopathy
  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome (pain with stairs or squatting)
  • Early degenerative joint changes
  • Chronic swelling after activity

Elbow & Wrist

  • Tennis/pickleball elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Wrist tendinopathies
  • De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
  • Grip weakness
  • Pain with lifting or repetitive use
  • Persistent pain after overuse injuries

Hip & Pelvis

  • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
  • Gluteal tendinopathy
  • Hip bursitis
  • Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
  • Hip flexor irritation
  • Pain lying on one side
  • Pain with running or prolonged walking

Spine & Other

  • Chronic myofascial pain
  • Trigger points
  • Facet-related joint pain
  • Certain degenerative joint conditions
  • Chronic neck stiffness
  • Low back pain that hasn’t responded to traditional care
  • Scar tissue and restricted soft tissue mobility
  • Persistent pain after previous injury

Emerging research is also exploring its potential role in neuropathy, bone healing, and more advanced regenerative applications.

What a Treatment Feels Like

Most patients describe it as:

  • A tapping or pulsing sensation eliciting a dull ache
  • Mild to moderate intensity (we adjust based on tolerance)
  • 5–10 minutes per treatment area
  • No anesthesia required

Some temporary soreness is normal, similar to a workout response, but most people return to activity immediately.
